The Science of Propellers: Matching Pitch and Diameter to Your Hull

You can buy the most powerful outboard motor in the world, but if you don’t have the right propeller, you are wasting fuel and sacrificing performance. The propeller is the “gearing” of your boat. Choosing between different pitches and diameters determines whether your boat has a fast “hole shot” for skiing or a high top-end speed for offshore cruising. At Wave Engines Pty Ltd, we help you fine-tune this critical connection.

Pitch vs. Diameter: Understanding the Numbers

Propellers are usually described by two numbers, such as 13-1/2 x 15. The first number is the Diameter (the distance across the circle made by the blade tips), and the second is the Pitch.

What is Propeller Pitch?

Pitch is the theoretical distance a propeller moves through the water in one full revolution. A 15-pitch prop moves 15 inches forward.

  • Lower Pitch (e.g., 11-13): Like a low gear in a car. Better for heavy loads and quick acceleration.
  • Higher Pitch (e.g., 17-21): Like a high gear. Better for light boats looking for maximum top speed.

The WOT Test: To find the perfect prop, you must run your engine at Wide Open Throttle (WOT). If your RPMs are too high, you need more pitch. If they are too low, you need less. Check your manual or our FAQ Page for your engine’s specific RPM range.

Aluminium vs. Stainless Steel

When upgrading a high-horsepower outboard, the material of the prop makes a massive difference.

MaterialAdvantagesBest For
AluminiumCost-effective, “sacrificial” (breaks to save your gearcase)Portable motors, rocky/shallow waters
Stainless SteelStronger, thinner blades, less flex, better performanceOffshore fishing, high-speed hulls

Engine-Specific Propellers

Each brand has its own propeller geometry. A Mercury prop is designed to work with their specific gearcase ratios, just as a Yamaha prop is tuned for their power curves. Mixing and matching requires expert advice to avoid “ventilation” or “cavitation.”
