What Is — and Isn't — Covered

Manufacturer warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. Here's a plain-English summary of what that typically means across all brands we stock.

Generally Covered
Defects in materials or workmanship on all internal engine components
Powerhead, crankshaft, pistons, cylinder block and head
Fuel injection system and electronic engine management components
Gearcase, lower unit, and driveshaft where factory faults are present
Labour costs for approved warranty repairs at an authorised dealer
Factory-fitted electrical components (starter motor, charging system, ignition)
Generally Not Covered
Normal wear items — spark plugs, impellers, anodes, fuel filters, belts
Propellers — damage from striking underwater objects or cavitation wear
Damage from incorrect fuel or oil (e.g. mixing 2-stroke oil in a 4-stroke)
Corrosion and environmental damage, particularly from saltwater neglect
Damage from overheating due to blocked water intake or running without coolant
Non-genuine parts, aftermarket modifications, or repairs by unauthorised workshops

How to Make a Warranty Claim

We handle warranty claims on your behalf — you don't need to contact the manufacturer directly. Here's the process from start to finish.

01
Contact Us First
Get in touch with our team before doing anything else. Don't attempt repairs or start the motor if you suspect a fault. Contact us here.
02
Provide Your Details
Have your proof of purchase, motor serial number, and a description of the fault ready. Photos of the issue are helpful.
03
We Assess the Fault
Our team inspects the motor and determines whether the issue falls within the manufacturer's warranty terms. We'll keep you informed throughout.
04
Repair or Replace
If covered, we carry out the warranty repair using genuine parts — or arrange a replacement where applicable — at no cost to you.

How to Keep Your Warranty Valid

A few simple habits protect your investment and ensure your warranty remains intact for the full term — regardless of which brand you purchase.

Service on Schedule
Follow the manufacturer's service intervals — typically the first service at 20 hours, then annually or per the owner's manual. Late services can void extended warranty years on Yamaha, Tohatsu, Suzuki and Mercury.
Keep Your Service Records
Get your service logbook stamped at every service. If a warranty claim arises, the service history is the first thing any manufacturer will ask for — Honda, Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki or Tohatsu.
Use Genuine Parts
Only use manufacturer-approved oils, lubricants, and genuine OEM parts during services. Aftermarket substitutes can give any manufacturer grounds to deny a claim.
Flush After Saltwater Use
After every saltwater trip, flush the motor thoroughly with fresh water for several minutes. Corrosion from salt neglect is not covered under any manufacturer warranty — including Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, Yamaha or Tohatsu.
Don't Ignore Warning Signs
If your motor overheats, stalls unexpectedly, or shows unusual symptoms, stop and contact us. Running a damaged motor can turn a warranty claim into an out-of-pocket repair on any brand.
Register Your Motor
Tohatsu requires registration within 15 days of purchase. Mercury recommends online registration at purchase. We'll help you do this at the time of sale for any brand.

Warranty Policy — Full Details

The following applies to all new outboard motors sold by Wave Engines Pty Ltd across all five brands we stock.

1. Scope of Warranty

All new outboard motors sold by Wave Engines Pty Ltd are covered by the relevant manufacturer's limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty is issued by the manufacturer (Honda Marine, Mercury Marine, Suzuki Marine, Tohatsu, or Yamaha) — not by Wave Engines Pty Ltd — however we act as the authorised dealer and your first point of contact for all warranty matters.

2. Warranty Period

The warranty period begins on the date of purchase and varies by brand and use type:

  • Honda Marine: 7 years recreational / 3 years or 1,000 hours commercial (serviced by authorised dealer)
  • Tohatsu: 3 years standard + 2 years extended recreational (serviced by authorised dealer)
  • Yamaha: 2 years standard + 2 years extended recreational (serviced by authorised dealer)
  • Suzuki Marine: 3 years recreational / 1 year or 500 hours commercial (serviced by authorised dealer)
  • Mercury Marine: 3 years recreational / 1 year commercial (serviced by authorised dealer)

Commercial use is generally defined as use for hire, charter, rental, or any income-generating activity. If you are unsure whether your use qualifies as commercial, contact us before purchase.

3. What the Warranty Covers

The warranty covers the cost of parts and labour to repair or replace any component found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the warranty period. Coverage is comprehensive — from the powerhead through to the lower unit — unless specifically excluded below.

4. What the Warranty Does Not Cover

The following are excluded from all manufacturer warranties:

  • Scheduled maintenance items — spark plugs, impellers, anodes, oil and fuel filters
  • Propellers (unless defective from the factory)
  • Damage from operation beyond the motor's rated horsepower or load limits
  • Damage caused by incorrect fuel type, mixing of oils, or failure to maintain correct oil levels
  • Corrosion caused by inadequate maintenance in saltwater environments
  • Overheating damage resulting from blocked water intake, damaged impeller, or operator neglect
  • Physical damage from accidents, impact, or improper trailering
  • Modifications or repairs carried out by non-authorised workshops or using non-genuine parts
  • Consequential or indirect losses (e.g. lost fishing days, towing costs) except where required by Australian Consumer Law

5. Maintaining Your Warranty

To maintain full warranty coverage — including any extended warranty years on Yamaha and Tohatsu — all scheduled services must be carried out:

  • At the intervals specified in the owner's manual
  • By an authorised dealer for the relevant brand
  • Using genuine manufacturer-approved parts and fluids

Service records must be retained and the service logbook endorsed at each service. Failure to produce evidence of scheduled maintenance may result in a warranty claim being denied by any manufacturer.

6. How to Make a Claim

Contact us at info@waveengines.com.au or call 0480 804 205 or visit our store with your motor, proof of purchase, and service records. Do not attempt to operate a motor you believe has a warranty-related fault. We will assess the issue and liaise with the manufacturer on your behalf.

If your motor requires warranty work and you are not located near South Melbourne, we can help direct you to the nearest authorised service dealer for your brand.

7. Australian Consumer Law

Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure, and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. The manufacturer warranties described on this page are in addition to, and do not limit, your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Australian Consumer Law Notice: Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. This page describes additional manufacturer warranty benefits which are separate to, and do not limit, those statutory rights.
