Outboard Motor Storage & Winterization: Protecting Your Engine from the Off-Season

In Australia, while we are blessed with a long boating season, there are times when your outboard motor may sit idle for months. Whether it’s due to the winter chill in Melbourne or a busy work schedule, “parking” your boat without proper preparation is the leading cause of engine trouble. At Wave Engines Pty Ltd, we want to help you avoid the dreaded “engine won’t start” scenario on your first trip back.

The Fuel Factor: Why Inactivity Kills Engines

Modern unleaded fuel, especially E10, begins to break down in as little as 30 days. It attracts moisture, which leads to phase separation and the formation of a sticky “varnish” inside your fuel injectors and carburetors. This is particularly dangerous for portable outboards with small jets.

Step 1: Stabilize and Flush

Add a high-quality marine fuel stabilizer to your tank and run the engine for at least 15 minutes. This ensures the treated fuel reaches every part of the engine’s internal system. While you’re at it, perform a thorough fresh-water flush to remove any salt deposits.

Internal Protection: Fogging and Lubrication

Corrosion doesn’t just happen on the outside. Moist air inside the cylinders can cause microscopic rust on the cylinder walls. For long-term storage, “fogging” the engine with specialized oil is recommended. Additionally, check your warranty information to see if your manufacturer has specific off-season maintenance requirements to keep your coverage valid.

Step 2: Oil and Gear Lube

Used engine oil contains acidic combustion byproducts that can pit metal over time. Change your oil and gear luster before storage. This also gives you a chance to inspect the gear oil—if it looks “milky,” it means you have a seal leak that needs professional attention.

Battery and Exterior Care

Batteries naturally discharge over time. We recommend removing the battery and keeping it on a trickle charger in a dry place. Finally, apply a high-quality marine wax or anti-corrosion spray to the engine’s exterior and move points.
